Are all countries the same?

This week we have been learning all about Chinese New Year and we have been thinking about differences between China and the UK. We watched videos of a little girl who celebrates Chinese New Year with her family and found out lots of ways to prepare for the new year- cleaning the house, decorating the house, preparing delicious food and wearing red clothes for good luck. We realised that there were some similarities to how we prepare for Christmas!

Throughout the week we have created our own dragons, tried to write numbers in Mandarin and build our own Great Walls, using photographs of the Great Wall of China to help us.

On Friday, we helped Mrs Little cook and we decided to make noodles. We thought about what might happen to the noodles as they boiled and how they would change from hard to soft. Together we wrote a recipe to show our grown-ups and to finish the afternoon, we tasted the delicious noodles that we made.

We cannot wait to do more cooking in Chestnut Class!

What a brilliant week,

Mrs Little 🙂

Chestnuts become Explorers!

In forest school we have started learning all about David Attenborough. We have discovered that he has been interested in living things since he was a child! We decided to go out and explore just like he does. We talked about what we found using full sentences and told our friends what we thought was happening to the living things outside.

When we found a pool of water, we were fascinated by the ripples it made.

We can’t wait to explore more next week.

Well done Chestnuts!

Jigsaw Genie has a challenge for us!

This morning in Jigsaw, Genie had left a really tricky challenge for Mrs Little. He wanted her to try and build a tower using play dough and spaghetti. Mrs Little found it very challenging and wanted to give up, she even got a little grumpy and threw some spaghetti.

Initially, we found this quite funny. But we quickly realised that Mrs Little was finding the challenge hard and we wanted to help. Everyone gave suggestions on what might help:

“Take your time and try your best”

“Slow down while you build that might help”

“We are proud of you Mrs Little”-

“It doesn’t matter if it breaks you’ve tried your best”

It was wonderful to hear the Chestnuts expressing such lovely comments and thinking about being a Persevering Parrot. Mrs Little was able to complete the challenge with the support from everyone else!

We chatted about how lots of things start of hard, but the more we try and practise the easier things can become.

Some of us set ourselves the goal of trying to complete this challenge during Learning Time. It was lots of fun.

Well done Chestnuts 🙂

Welcome to the Mermaid Hair Salon

Our role play area has changed over Christmas and we now have a Mermaid Hair Salon. The children have loved exploring the changes and have really enjoyed the addition of a till.

We have been using our hair style magazine to pick hair styles to then have our friends help us achieve. We have thought of prices and charged our friends money for their hair styles. We even have a cafe where Chestnuts can order food and drinks while they wait.

There has been lots of discussion on hair styles, colours and language related to money.
