Minibeast Fun🦋

This week we have been thinking all about minibeasts and how to look after them.

We have enjoyed learning about life cycles of caterpillars today, especially as our caterpillars have turned into beautiful butterflies! To finish our day, we walked down into our environmental area to set them free. Before Miss Coughlin opened the net, we worked together to collect leaves, flowers and other natural things we thought the butterflies might like.

We were so excited to set them free. Some of them were rather stubborn and wanted to stay in the net, so Miss Coughlin used her hands to carefully get them out. Sadly, one of our butterflies had a damaged wing. We thought about ways to keep the injured butterfly comfortable and safe. We placed the butterfly in the bug hotel and put lots of flowers and leaves in there with it.

With Mrs Kerr we made mud bricks for our Chestnut Class bug hotel. We crushed the mud, added dry grass and mixed it with water. This was a messy job! We then moulded it into a brick shape and added holes. To wash our hands, we used water from a watering can.

We went on a minibeast hunt with magnifying glasses and collected minibeasts to look at. We found worms, moths and woodlice. After talking about them, we set them free.

What a busy week we have had!

Miss Coughlin 🙂
