Christmas Theatre Show

What a treat for Chestnut Class today…. we had a theatre company ‘Boo to a Goose’ come in to Saplings for a Christmas performance where we joined them.  The children were treated to Christmas stories, songs and even snow.  They giggled in delight when the snow was falling and loved joining in with the songs and actions.

It was great for Saplings and reception to see each other again and share in an amazing experience.

Christmas preparations

Chestnut Class have had great fun making decorations for our class hoop and the school Christmas tree.  We made Christmas trees for the hoop.  We started by painting pine cones green then decorating them with glitter.  We painted a cork red and glued it to the base.  Each decoration was strung to our hoop and hung from the school hall.

We also made crackers for our school Christmas tree.  We used cardboard tubes and wrapped them in crepe paper.  We tied each end using ribbon.  Some children came up with, and tried to write, their own jokes to put inside.  Some added drawings inside as a present.  They then decorated them.

Safety Day

Chestnut Class were lucky enough to have members of the emergency services come in to school and give talks and workshops about how to stay safe.  They took part in self defence lessons and learnt about the different coloured flags on the beach.  They had a great day and loved talking about their own experiences of how to stay safe.

Children In Need

For Children In Need, Chestnut Class made Pudsey biscuits then decorated them ready to sell.  They sold out within an hour so were a huge success.  We talked about what Children In Need is and what the word “charity” means.  Lots of children could relate this to charity shops.

On the Friday, the children were free to wander around the school, taking part in different planned activities from face painting to biscuit decoration.  They loved having their own money to spend and walked around confidently.  We were so proud of them.

What a fabulous time was had by all!

Special Events

Last week we learnt how to keep ourselves safe around bonfires and fireworks.  The children experimented with creating bonfire pictures, using a range of medium, including sticks and paint.

This week we learnt about Remembrance Day.  We watched the Cbeebies Remembrance Day film clip and talked about why the rabbit was scared.  We made our own poppies using split pins.  It was tricky to push the pin through but we persevered and made some great flowers.

Stay and Play part I

Parents joined us today for a Stay and Play session.  The children loved sharing their activities, learning with the grown ups and showing them round the classroom.  They made Pudsey Bear hats and Pudsey balloon faces.  They now want to make Pudsey masks!

It was a great afternoon.  Thank you to those parents that came in.  We look forward to welcoming more in our next Stay and Play session.

First Chestnut!

In our class we have a Chestnut Tree display.  It is made up of all our hand prints.  Across a half term we have to collect 10 chestnuts to earn a special treat.  We vote on the treat we would like.  We get a chestnut when we work together as a class showing great learning behaviours or demonstrating our school values.

Today we earnt our first chestnut for such a great phonics session!  Our special helper added it to the tree.  9 more to go….

Well done to all the Chestnuts that made a pumpkin for the pumpkin competition.  The designs were really creative and scary!

Well done especially to Reuben for winning the foundation class competition.  This was then followed by a disco arranged by the PTA.  They thoroughly loved it.

We are having a focus on ‘India’ this week.

We started by exploring the climate of India then looking at the clothes they wear.  We compared it to our clothes then looked at Indian food.  We used our senses to decide if we liked the sauces.  In groups, we then made chapattis by mixing ingredients, kneading the dough and cooking it.
